The Lowest-Rated Video Games of 2025, Per Metacritic

Everywhere you look, enthusiasts are eagerly sharing their rankings of the best releases of 2025. Yet, where are the disasters, the underperformers? Let's take a momentary detour to recognize the absolute worst games of the year, based on review aggregator Metacritic. Is every one of these games truly as terrible as the reviews suggest? We shall see.

10. Welcome Tour for Switch 2

Metascore: 54/100, User Score: 3.4/10

First impressions to this tech demo were heavily influenced by its $9.99 price tag, with many voicing frustration it wasn't a free pack-in like some other console launches. Professional assessment varied dramatically, from "crushing disappointment" to slightly kinder reviews that highlighted the charming software underneath the controversy. In spite of the controversy, the title proved to be a notable digital seller during its launch month.

9. Rennsport

Aggregate Score: 53/100, Audience Score: 3.2/10

Presented as "more than a racing game," this driving sim from Competition Company and Teyon garnered largely negative reviews. The consensus was that the game was lacking in nearly every way, particularly in a year filled with excellent racing experiences. In the eyes of critics, this underwhelming entry was advised to be left in the garage.

8. The Purrfect Bubsy Collection

Aggregate Score: 53/100, User Score: 8.6/10

To begin with: the confusing title grammar is a silly strike against it. This collection of retro Bubsy titles showcases a rude feline known for incessant hacky one-liners. Reviewers noted that these games were not good originally and have not improved with age. The surprisingly strong user score stands as a baffling oddity to the critical reception.

7. Hunter x Hunter Fighting Game

Metascore: 53, User Score: 3.5

This anime-inspired fighter faced significant backlash from both reviewers and fans. Complaints centered on a thin roster of characters and a minimal offering of features. Fan reaction was particularly negative, with some expressing a wish that the title's failure would have consequences for similar releases.

6. Riders Vs Dogoos

Metascore: 51, User Score: 5.3

Hailing from the niche Hyperdimension Neptunia series, this bike-riding title tasks players with gathering cute monsters. Reviewers felt that its attempt to mimic a unique gameplay loop ultimately fell flat, coming across as more of a quick spin-off than a worthy series entry. Its brief runtime combined with a $40 price tag was criticized.

5. Captain Blood

Aggregate Score: 50, User Score: 5.3

This title is a piece of lost media from the past, seeing the light of day after years and years in development hell. The publishers consciously chose to keep the game as an period-accurate artifact of its time, fully aware that contemporary players might not appreciate its old-school mechanics. As such, many reviews noted that the fascinating story of its development was more compelling than the end product.

4. Scar-Lead Salvation

Aggregate Score: 44, Audience Score: 2.4

This anime-styled roguelike shooter drawing from games like *Returnal* failed to impress with critics. Frequent criticisms centered on uninspired foes, monotonous stage design, and a forgettable story. A controversial mechanic involving the protagonist's clothing was seen as adding nothing and detracted from the game's overall experience.

3. Ambulance Life

Metascore: 44, Audience Score: 4.9

Recall the strategic medical sims of the past, then take out the satisfying gameplay. That, according to reviews, is essentially *Ambulance Life*. Reviewers found the core gameplay loop to be monotonous, and the narrative's handling of mental health topics was criticized as being poorly executed. The overall experience was deemed not very compelling.

2. Tamagotchi Plaza

Metascore: 43, User Score: 5.8

This shift away from the classic digital companion formula turns the franchise into a shopping simulation title. The result, per critics, was a dull collection of basic activities that very soon overstayed its welcome. Some reviews went so far as to call it one of the worst titles available on its platform, noting a profound lack of depth.

1. MindsEye

Aggregate Score: 37, User Score: 2.5

Arriving as a blockbuster crime saga from a team featuring well-known figures, *MindsEye* was a notable critical flop. Reviews heavily criticized its poor shooting mechanics, dull missions, and a plethora of game-breaking glitches. Critics found it to be a downgrade compared to much older games in the action genre. Despite the sea of negativity, a tiny number of positive user reviews found something to enjoy in the experience, offering a rare contrast.
